Start with Beijing West (北京西) and Xi’an North (西安北), then compare the complete journey—not just the time on the train.

The straightforward rail route is Beijing West (北京西) → Xi’an North (西安北). A Beijing government notice gave 4 hours 11 minutes as the fastest scheduled train time between these stations under the June 2022 timetable. That is a dated benchmark, not a promise for your departure: stopping patterns and schedules change. Search your travel date on China Railway 12306, selecting the full station names, to see the train time you can book.

How long does it take, and is the train better than flying?

Part of the trip What to allow
Intercity train Use the departure and arrival times shown for your chosen service on 12306. The 4h 11m figure above is a historical fastest-service benchmark.
Time at Beijing West Allow 60–90 minutes before departure if you are unfamiliar with the station or have luggage. This is a planning allowance, not a railway minimum.
Xi’an North to your accommodation Add the metro or road transfer shown by your map for your specific address, plus time to leave the train and station.

For a planning example, suppose your train takes five hours, your trip to Beijing West takes 40 minutes, you arrive there 75 minutes early, and reaching your Xi’an hotel after the train takes 55 minutes. That totals 7 hours 50 minutes door to door. These are illustrative assumptions, not a published timetable or a measured journey.

Rail is often a convenient choice when you start and finish in the cities: you board with your luggage and avoid two airport transfers. Compare it with a flight if an airport is especially convenient, a suitable train is sold out, or a flight fits your schedule better. Add the airport journeys, airline check-in and security time, and the transfer from Xi’an’s airport before deciding. Compare hotel-to-hotel time, rather than train time against flight time alone.

Choose the right Beijing departure

Search 北京西 as the departure station and 西安北 as the arrival station. Beijing has several rail terminals, and “Beijing” in a search result does not necessarily mean Beijing West. Check both station names again on the order confirmation.

Beijing West connects to subway Lines 7 and 9; Beijing Subway’s Line 9 station page identifies 北京西站 and its entrances. Choose a train you can reach comfortably from your hotel. An early departure can give you an afternoon in Xi’an; a later arrival may leave you relying on a taxi or ride-hailing service if your preferred metro service has ended. Check the current last-train times for the day you travel.

Tickets, prices and a foreign passport

Use the official 12306 website or Railway 12306 app to compare trains. The fare you pay depends on the date, service and seat class, so use the price displayed for the train you intend to buy. Compare second class against first class, faster against slower services, and convenient arrival times against the fare shown at checkout. For a flight comparison, include the baggage allowance and both airport transfers. Available seats can change while you decide; this page does not show live inventory.

A foreign passport is an accepted identity document for railway ticket purchase. Enter the passenger’s name and passport details consistently with the document you will carry. 12306 says foreign-passport users and passengers can submit document photographs for online identity verification; cases such as unusually long names may require a station ticket window. Complete verification early so there is time to resolve a problem before departure day. See our foreign-passport 12306 guide and train ticket guide for the booking steps.

If your first choice shows sold out, check another departure or seat class and consider 12306’s waitlist (候补). A waitlist request is not a confirmed ticket: look for an issued, paid order before making a tight onward plan. Beijing’s government reported that some popular Beijing departures sold out quickly for the September 2026 holiday while other departures remained available; that observation does not predict availability on your date.

Enter Beijing West with luggage

Take the original passport used to book. 12306 instructs passengers using documents outside its listed machine-readable categories to use the staffed identity-check and ticket-gate channels. Follow signs for security and your train’s waiting area; ask staff for the staffed channel if an automated gate does not read your document. Keep your train number handy, because platforms are assigned through the station’s departure displays.

For high-speed trains, 12306 states a 20 kg free carry-on allowance per adult, a 20 kg limit per item, and a 130 cm maximum sum of an item’s length, width and height. Check restricted items before packing. A suitcase that is easy to move through security, escalators and the aisle will make the journey easier, even if it meets those limits. The suggested 60–90-minute station allowance above is especially useful when you need a staffed check or have several bags; allow more if you must resolve a ticket or identity issue.

If the train is delayed, follow station announcements and the status in 12306 before changing your plans. For a major disruption, ask railway staff or use 12306 to examine the applicable change or refund options. Rules depend on whether the train is delayed, suspended, or you simply miss it; do not assume you may board a different train on the original booking. Tell your Xi’an accommodation if your arrival will shift.

From Xi’an North into the city

On arrival, follow Exit / 出站 signs to the station concourse. Xi’an North is a major station north of the historic centre, so the railway arrival is not the end of a central Xi’an trip. The local government’s station transport guide identifies metro Lines 2, 4 and 14 at 西安北站.

For accommodation near Bell Tower (钟楼), Line 2 is a useful direct metro choice: confirm your hotel’s nearest exit on a map you can use in China before setting off. Line 4 may suit an address along its corridor; Line 14 serves another part of the network, including the airport direction. Buy a local metro ticket or use an accepted payment method at the station. With bulky luggage, an address far from a metro stop, or an arrival after the last suitable train, follow signs to the official taxi queue or use a ride-hailing pickup point. Show the driver your hotel’s Chinese name and address.

Your next step is to search your travel date on 12306 for 北京西 → 西安北, compare the displayed arrival time and fare with a complete flight journey, and save your Xi’an hotel address in Chinese before departure.
