This editorial sample connects major historic cities with Sichuan food and a slower stretch among the landscapes around Guilin and Yangshuo. It suits a first visit if you are comfortable changing bases five times and giving two long-distance transfer days most of their daylight. It may feel rushed if frequent packing is tiring or if you want several full hiking days. The plan specifies places to sleep, not a tour, ticket guarantee, or transport schedule; check actual services and opening arrangements before booking.

Route and overnight plan
Stay four nights in Beijing, three in Xi'an, four in Chengdu, one in Guilin, four in Yangshuo, and four in Shanghai. That is 20 nights: arrival on day 1 and departure on day 21 require no extra hotel night. Beijing and Chengdu get room for a city day and an excursion; the Guilin night breaks the journey before the Yangshuo stay. Shanghai closes the route with several days that can absorb a late arrival or a change of plans.
Day-by-day sample
Keep arrival and departure days light. A named sight below is a planning focus, not a promise that its admission or weather will suit a particular date. Shift outdoor days within each base when the forecast calls for it.
| Day | Overnight base | Main plan | Transfer impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Beijing | Arrive, settle in, and take a short neighborhood walk. | Arrival time controls the day. |
| 2 | Beijing | Visit the Forbidden City area and nearby central streets. | Local travel only; check admission in advance. |
| 3 | Beijing | Choose a Great Wall outing and leave the evening open. | Excursion takes much of the day. |
| 4 | Beijing | Explore the Temple of Heaven or a hutong, with time to rest. | Local travel only. |
| 5 | Xi'an | Travel from Beijing; take an evening walk if energy permits. | Intercity transfer is the priority. |
| 6 | Xi'an | Visit the Terracotta Warriors, then return for dinner. | Excursion takes much of the day. |
| 7 | Xi'an | Explore the city wall and central neighborhoods at an easy pace. | Local travel only. |
| 8 | Chengdu | Travel from Xi'an and settle near your chosen base. | Intercity transfer is the priority. |
| 9 | Chengdu | Visit a panda facility if available, then keep the afternoon flexible. | Allow for local travel and entry arrangements. |
| 10 | Chengdu | Explore teahouses, parks, and Sichuan food. | Local travel only. |
| 11 | Chengdu | Use a full day for a chosen excursion or a slower city day. | Avoid stacking a distant excursion with other timed sights. |
| 12 | Guilin | Travel from Chengdu and check in. | Reserve most of the day for the transfer. |
| 13 | Yangshuo | Move from Guilin to Yangshuo; explore near your accommodation. | Local or regional transfer, with a relaxed afternoon. |
| 14 | Yangshuo | Spend a scenic day by the Li or Yulong River area. | Choose the outing to fit conditions. |
| 15 | Yangshuo | Cycle or walk a suitable countryside route, with breaks. | Local travel only; keep a rain alternative. |
| 16 | Yangshuo | Keep a second landscape day for the activity missed or enjoyed most. | Flexible buffer for weather and rest. |
| 17 | Shanghai | Transfer locally from Yangshuo, then continue by a booked rail or flight itinerary. | Reserve most of the day; verify every connection and endpoint. |
| 18 | Shanghai | Walk the Bund and explore a nearby district. | Local travel only. |
| 19 | Shanghai | Choose museums or neighborhoods according to interests. | Local travel only; check opening days. |
| 20 | Shanghai | Use a flexible final city day for a missed sight, shopping, or rest. | Keep the evening manageable before departure. |
| 21 | None | Depart Shanghai; add a short activity only if timing allows. | Leave ample time for the departure journey. |
Protect the transfer days
Compare actual rail and flight schedules, station or airport locations, and the trip from each endpoint to your hotel before committing. Day 5 connects Beijing and Xi'an; day 8 connects Xi'an and Chengdu. Day 12 from Chengdu to Guilin is deliberately a travel day, so a late arrival does not erase a promised excursion.
Day 17 begins with a local transfer out of Yangshuo before rail or a flight toward Shanghai. Do not assume a direct Yangshuo–Shanghai service or book separate legs with a tight connection. Build in time for check-out, reaching the departure point, security, and onward travel after arrival.
What to confirm before booking
Check the current admission process for high-demand sights before assigning a fixed day. For the Forbidden City, use the dedicated ticket guide and its official booking directions rather than relying on an old screenshot or an assumed walk-up option. Confirm each accommodation's location against the station, airport, or activity that matters most to you.
Check your own entry requirements with an authoritative source for your passport and travel dates. The visa checker can organize the question, but an itinerary does not establish eligibility. Book long-distance legs against the actual timetable and leave enough flexibility around weather-sensitive scenery.
Make the route fit your pace
If you prefer fewer hotel changes, stay in Guilin or Yangshuo for the whole scenic segment and arrange outings from that base, after checking the resulting travel times. If a rainy day spoils a planned river or countryside outing, swap it with day 16 and choose an indoor activity or rest instead. Chengdu's fourth night and Shanghai's flexible final day also give you room to slow down without trying to recover every missed stop.
With only two weeks, remove a region rather than compressing all six bases into shorter stops. A 14-day route provides another starting point for that choice.
Estimate your own cost
Price rooms for 20 nights, then add each long-distance leg, local transfers, daily food and activities, and a contingency. The amount changes with dates, room sharing, transport choices, and what you actually book. Enter your own Chinese yuan (CNY) assumptions in the trip calculator; its shorter teaching examples are starting points for understanding the fields, not prices for this 21-day route.
