GETTING AROUND

Choose the right transport for each journey.

Compare China trains, flights, metro and taxis by total journey time, luggage, arrival location and the risk of a missed connection.

The short answer

Compare door-to-door journeys. Use the exact station or airport, add the transfers and required check-in time, and choose an arrival that still lets you reach your hotel comfortably.

Jump to the question you need

Train or flight between cities?

Write down when you would leave your hotel and when you could realistically reach the next one. The fastest advertised train or shortest flight is not automatically the best complete journey. A cheaper ticket can also create another night’s accommodation or an expensive late transfer.

When to avoid a tight connection

A separately booked domestic trip followed by an international departure needs more thought than two times that fit on paper. Check whether you must collect luggage, change terminals or airports, repeat security or meet a separate baggage deadline.

For an essential long-haul flight, consider arriving in the departure city the previous day. This is an editorial buffer, not a guarantee against disruption. If you choose same-day travel, understand the conditions and support available from each operator before buying.

Metro, taxi or a pre-arranged transfer?

A metro can be a good choice when the route is straightforward and you can manage your bags through stations. Check the last service and the walk from the exit to your accommodation. A route with multiple changes may be poor value for a tired family even if the fare is lower.

A taxi or ride-hailing trip can simplify the last part of a journey. Use the official queue or verified booking, provide the hotel’s Chinese address and confirm the payment method. Traffic still matters, particularly before a timed ticket or departure.

For a pre-arranged transfer, get the meeting point, contact method, waiting allowance, luggage capacity and total price in writing. Know what happens if your flight is delayed.

Make your first hour predictable

Do the research before landing so you are comparing two workable options rather than starting from zero at the arrivals hall.

  1. Save the arrival airport code or full railway station name.
  2. Save the hotel’s Chinese name, address, phone number and check-in instructions.
  3. Choose a primary transfer and one backup if the first is unavailable.
  4. Prepare payment and an offline copy of the address.
  5. Keep the first evening free of a prepaid timed attraction.

Reduce the friction of moving cities

Plan a bag you can handle through the station and hotel transfer. Check the actual carrier’s baggage allowance instead of treating the limits for a flight and a train as interchangeable.

On a transfer day, keep documents, payment, medication you normally use, charging equipment and the next address accessible. A carefully chosen hotel near your useful transport route can save more effort than a slightly faster intercity service.

Put this into your trip
