The short answer
Prepare payment, navigation, transport and translation options before departure. Save key travel details offline so one connection problem does not stop your day.
Jump to the question you need
Payments: set up while you have time
Install Alipay or WeChat and complete applicable card and identity steps ahead of travel. Keep access to your home number if your bank sends confirmation messages to it.
Data: compare the details, not just the headline price
For roaming, SIM or eSIM plans, check device compatibility, activation timing, data allowance, hotspot support and the service’s actual coverage. An unlocked phone and eSIM support are separate checks.
Ask the provider how your important services work on its connection. Do not assume every plan offers the same app access or phone-number features.
Your small offline survival kit
Store the next hotel’s address and contact number, transport confirmations, key reservations and a short list of useful phrases. Keep sensitive document copies protected on your device.
A power bank, the right charging cable and a plan for connecting after landing are often more valuable than another app. Check carrier restrictions for batteries before flying.
A small app kit organised by what you need to do
Choose one workable option for each essential task, then test it with your real route. Avoid creating many accounts you do not need. Save support links and keep the login method accessible during travel.
| Task | Starting option | Preparation check |
|---|---|---|
| Pay a merchant | Alipay or WeChat Pay | Complete card checks and find transaction history. |
| Find your hotel | Amap or another map that resolves the address | Save the Chinese name, exact branch and entrance. |
| Book a train | Official 12306 English service | Prepare passenger details and understand booking status. |
| Get a ride | Official DiDi service | Prepare payment and know how pickup zones work. |
| Translate a menu or address | A translation tool supported on your device | Check offline text/camera features and download what you need. |
| Reach your bookings | Your airline and accommodation confirmations | Save readable copies outside an app that might require a fresh login. |
Rehearse one day before leaving home
Search for the first hotel, save the route from the arrival point, open your payment account and locate the next rail reservation. You do not need to buy anything to find out whether you can read the screens and reach your records.
Try opening your saved addresses and confirmations without a live connection. If the information disappears, make a genuinely offline copy. Keep sensitive documents protected instead of storing a public shared link.
Prepare permissions and power deliberately
A navigation or ride app may need location during use; that does not mean every app needs continuous access to all your contacts and photos. Read the prompt and grant what is needed for the task.
Carry a charging plan and check the applicable airline/rail rules for your battery equipment. Keep the first hotel’s address available to a travel companion so a single flat phone does not stop the group.
