The short answer
Choose by the tasks your phone must perform. A data-only travel eSIM can provide internet without a mainland phone number; roaming can retain your home number; a local SIM may suit travellers who need local calls and SMS.
Jump to the question you need
Choose the connection that fits your trip
Separate three questions: can your phone use this plan, does it include the number or messages you need, and can it reach the services you depend on? A cheap data allowance is not enough if you cannot receive the bank message needed to pay.
| Option | Why consider it | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Home-carrier roaming | Keep using your home number with minimal setup | China coverage, daily charges, data cap, calls and incoming SMS terms |
| Travel eSIM | Install a plan without collecting a physical SIM | Exact device/region support, carrier unlock, activation trigger, hotspot and data-only status |
| Mainland local SIM | Local calls or SMS alongside data | Foreign-passport registration, shop hours, handset support, plan cancellation and top-ups |
| Wi-Fi only | A temporary fallback while getting connected | Login process and whether it works without a local SMS number; not continuous street navigation |
Check your exact phone, not just its model family
Look up the model number and purchase region in your phone settings, then compare them with the provider’s compatibility list. Carrier lock and eSIM capability are separate issues. A phone that supports eSIM may still be locked to one carrier.
If using two lines, decide which handles mobile data and which keeps your home number reachable. Read your carrier’s roaming conditions before enabling the home line; settings that preserve SMS access can still expose you to charges if calls or data are used.
Ask these questions before buying a plan
Keep the answers with your booking. “Unlimited” may have a fair-use speed limit, and a package duration may begin at installation, first connection or a fixed date.
- When does the validity period start, and which time zone is used?
- Is this data only, or does it include calls, SMS and a mainland number?
- Does it allow tethering to a laptop or another traveller’s phone?
- Which network and coverage apply to the cities on my route?
- What happens after the high-speed allowance is used?
- Can I reinstall the profile after changing phones or deleting it?
- How do I contact support if the connection itself is not working?
- What is the refund policy if my handset cannot activate it?
Set up an arrival-day recovery plan
Install only when the provider’s activation rules make it sensible. Retain the setup instructions offline, including any APN or roaming setting that the provider explicitly requires. Do not delete a failing eSIM profile until support confirms it can be reinstalled.
At Shanghai Pudong, the city’s April 2026 service notice describes short-term SIM support at the international service centre and passport-based airport Wi-Fi access. Treat this as a Pudong-specific option, not a promise for every airport or arrival hour.
If you cannot get data working, show the saved Chinese hotel address at the official transport desk. Your ability to get to the hotel should not depend on resolving an account login at the kerb.
Will my usual apps work?
Access can differ between a mainland connection, a roaming route and a travel data provider. Ask your provider about the specific services you need, and test them before depending on them for a boarding pass or work call. We do not guarantee access to a named service on an untested plan.
Save transport confirmations, hotel addresses and a translation fallback locally. A data plan also does not guarantee that every Chinese booking app accepts an overseas number. Check each essential reservation channel in advance.
Questions worth asking
Do I need a mainland phone number for a short holiday?
Not for every task. Decide based on the booking and contact services you will actually use; do not buy a local number simply because a data plan sounds incomplete.
Should I delete my home eSIM?
Follow your carrier’s guidance. Deleting it can make restoring your number difficult. Select the intended data line instead of removing profiles casually.
