The short answer
On ordinary mainland Wi-Fi and local mobile connections, expect WhatsApp, Gmail and Google Maps to be inaccessible. International roaming and some travel eSIM plans may provide access through overseas routing, but this depends on the specific provider and plan. A working data connection does not guarantee that a particular app will work.
Jump to the question you need
Can I use WhatsApp, Gmail and Google Maps?
For a first mainland China trip, prepare as though all three will be unavailable on hotel Wi-Fi, airport Wi-Fi and a mainland local SIM. WhatsApp messages and calls may fail; Gmail may not refresh; Google Maps may not load searches or directions. Installing an app before departure does not remove network restrictions.
Previously downloaded emails or saved screenshots may remain readable, but that is different from receiving new information. Arrange another way to contact your hotel and travel companions, and save booking confirmations outside Gmail. These access expectations concern mainland China; do not automatically apply them to Hong Kong or Macau.
Why full signal does not mean app access
Signal bars, a 5G icon and unused data show that connectivity may be available. They do not establish whether your connection can reach an app's servers. A local website loading while Gmail fails can indicate a service-access problem rather than an exhausted data allowance.
The physical network and the route taken by internet traffic are separate. A roaming connection can use a mainland network for radio coverage while routing data overseas. An eSIM is simply a SIM format: the word itself says nothing about routing or unrestricted access.
| Connection | Access expectation | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Mainland Wi-Fi or local SIM | Expect mainland restrictions | Wi-Fi login requirements and local service availability |
| Home-carrier international roaming | Overseas routing may support your usual apps | China coverage, routing, charges and service limitations |
| Travel eSIM | Depends on the exact package | Written app-access claims, compatibility and support |
Ask about the actual plan, not just the brand
Airalo currently states that its China, Regional Asia and Global eSIMs with China coverage use international routing and support Google and WhatsApp. That is a provider statement, not a MyChinaRoute field test or a guarantee for other sellers. Confirm the exact package before buying; routing, partner networks and service conditions can change.
Ask whether WhatsApp messaging and calls, Gmail and Google Maps are supported separately. Also check hotspot support, activation timing and how to reach assistance if the app fails. Switching to hotel Wi-Fi changes your connection and can change access. Follow Chinese law; do not depend on unlicensed restriction-bypassing services.
Prepare maps and translation for your phone
On iPhone, prepare Apple Maps as a mainland navigation option; Apple confirms that its China service uses Amap mapping services. On Android, install a mainland mapping app such as Amap from its official distribution channel before flying. Save your hotel's Chinese name, address and nearest station. Even if Google Maps opens, confirm the destination and entrance locally.
Download Chinese and your own language in Google Translate where supported, then test translation in airplane mode. Offline functions differ from online conversation features. Apple says offline maps are available only in selected areas, so verify that your destination actually downloads. Keep address screenshots and a metro map regardless.
Keep bank SMS separate from travel data
A data-only travel eSIM does not replace the home number that receives your bank's verification codes. Airalo says many of its packages provide data only. Ask your home carrier whether your existing line can receive SMS in China and what charges apply.
If your phone supports both lines, keep the home line available for verification while selecting the travel line for data. Check automatic data switching to avoid unintended roaming charges. Set up bank-approved authentication alternatives before departure; neither SMS delivery nor banking-app access is guaranteed abroad.
Before flying—and if access fails
Complete downloads, account sign-ins and recovery preparation while your usual services are reachable. Keep essential information on the device, with a small printed backup.
- Confirm phone unlocking, eSIM compatibility and the package's activation instructions; save provider support details.
- Save hotel addresses, tickets, insurance contacts and account recovery codes securely offline.
- After landing, identify the active data line and test a local website, then each essential app.
- If nothing loads, check balance, coverage and provider settings. If only certain apps fail, contact the provider about access rather than repeatedly reinstalling them.
- Use saved addresses, offline translation and staffed hotel or transport desks until service returns.
